Two Storey Rear Extension and Remodel

PROJECT BRIEF

The original 1950s house was extensively remodelled internally by Abodhi Architects to update the layout and decor from its dated design. A modern 2 storey rear extension was added to the back to add a master bedroom with ensuite. Render was chosen to clad the first floor extension to help break up the brick composition and add a contemporary feel.

PROPOSED FLOOR PLAN

The existing layout was opened up into a modern open plan living arrangement with excellent connection to the garden through high spec sliding doors. A utility room was added behind the garage and connected to the kitchen. Upstairs the additional bedroom benefits from high vaulted ceilings with rooflights to maximise natural light. The rear window composition is fully extended into the slope of the roof which helps to provide a slick and contemporary feel without too much extra cost.

PLANNING APPLICATION

The scheme was passed by the planners without any revisions required as the scale and mass of the development was in keeping with the area and commensurate with the proportions of the overall site. The introduction of render as a new material was also welcomed to help excite the elevations.

DESIGN FEATURES

The large master bedroom offers sloping ceilings into the roof void and ensures a dramatic room to the clients taste. Clever positioning of the windows make the most of the changing daylight conditions and framed views of the gardens. On the ground floor the sliding doors offer fantastic views and access to the gardens whilst the spatial arrangement of all the living spaces to the rear ensures privacy from the street.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Parquet flooring complements the clean crisp lines of the sliding doors and the minimalist decoration design.

COMPLETION

The clients were thrilled with the finished project with the clean finish of the render box, appearing to float over a brick plinth base, being a particularly strong aesthetic and not a typical solution. Internally the open plan spaces work perfectly for their growing family.
