Extension and extensive remodel of a detached house

WETHERBY

BEFORE AND AFTER.jpg

PROJECT BRIEF

The original 1930s house was in need of modernisation and  Abodhi Architects were commissioned to design a single storey contemporary extension to provide a kitchen-diner environment for the modern family. The client was keen to explore a flat roof and contemporary box solution.

PROPOSED FLOOR PLAN

A poorly constructed lean-to extension was demolished, allowing for a new side and rear extension and providing a new utility room with side door access. The new open-plan kitchen-dining area has great natural daylight thanks to the roof lanterns and high quality windows and sliding doors. Access to the garden is greatly improved with a new hard landscaped patio area outside the sliding doors.

PLANNING APPLICATION

Abodhi worked closely with the planning department to allay concerns regarding the impact on a neighbouring property. They were able to demonstrate that the design adhered to the principles in the design guide and the scheme was subsequently passed without any design concessions.

DESIGN FEATURES

The kitchen layout was developed with the client to maximise the functionality whilst also providing a highly sociable space for both family time and entertaining. Spaces are orientated to make the most of the long distance views of the garden.

INTERIOR DESIGN

The 3 open plan zones of activity are clearly defined by the use of a kitchen island to delineate the space. A roof lantern over each area of activity also help to assign the spaces.
