Two Storey Side Extension and Single Storey Rear
BOSTON SPA

EXISTING
The brief was to provide a two storey side extension and single storey rear extension to facilitate a new master bedroom and remodelled kitchen with associated snug and utility room.

PROPOSED
A dramatic L shaped kitchen is created with sky lights and 2 large sliding doors to the garden. This allows for great flow and connectivity with the outside spaces, but also the room is flooded with natural light. A utility is positioned in the dark northern corner of the site and a snug with wood burner adds a new reception room to help accommodate the grandchildren. The first floor master suite benefits from an ensuite accessed through a dressing room.

PLANNING APPLICATION
Due to the site's proximity to a listed building, and the boundary of a conservation area, the planners were initially going to refuse the application. However following numerous careful discussions and meeting the chief planning officer on site to discuss the proposals they concluded the design was in keeping and sensitive to the surroundings. Good composition was noted and the use of existing materials commended.

DESIGN FEATURES
Skylights in the single storey kitchen extension allow for dramatic natural lighting internally. Replication of the stone detailing externally allows the extension to read as part of the original house.

COMPLETION
Abodhi Architects helped the client through the design process and onto the tender process to ensure a reputable contractor was appointed at a reasonable price. Excellent stone work ensures the finished project meets with the overall design ethos and client expectations.

INTERIOR DESIGN
A contemporary open plan kitchen allows for maximum flexibility when cooking and entertaining with good flow of space to the garden and snug area. Simple material palettes with excellent use of small amounts of signature colours unify the design and create a wonderful family space.
